Wasp:

The short film's plot consists of a young single mother named Zoe, 4, living in poverty in Dartford, struggling to find food for her and her children, when one day her ex-boyfriend drives by and asks her to go on a date, pretending that her children are not really hers, as she is afraid that he will go on like her and abandon them for hours, as she is on her date. The key shots used in the film are close ups of the characters faces to show their feelings this shot was normally used on the mother as we see her reaction to leave her children and the children faces, the colours and lighting are exceptionally bright for the darker tone of the film as in most of the film's natural colours such as greens and whites.
The blues stand out most and the natural lighting tends to emphasise those colours. The minimalist style with no non-diegetic music being present in the entire movie and the camera moving to handheld adds authenticity to the movie and plot. Conflict is present at the beginning of the film as Zoe has a fight with another mother as her children had a fight and connotes that she is portrayed as unstable because she instantly goes into violence when faced with conflict. The narrative is not like a typical novel, but it follows Todorov's theory somewhat As the mother meets Dave and goes out on a date with him as the disturbance to the family is depicted as the main characters but the children are more viewed as the main characters because they are seen to be hungry and left outside the bar for the entire day and this seems to be the norm for the children and the disturbance is generated as they know what their mother is going to do with Dave, Then as the woman Zoe deals with in the beginning asks her if she left her children at home alone again confirming that the viewer knows this is a normal occurrence, the Zoe is seen as an antagonistic to the children because she neglects them. The compromise comes when Dave finds out about her kids and the new balance Which is produced is ambiguous but has a positive atmosphere for the children. Zoe is initially astonished by her children, particularly when she speaks to Dave with her reputation already tarnished as she loses the battle she claims to the children as she does not realise that she is a failure as a mother And instead of acknowledging her deprivation, she pays for drinks she can't afford to keep her little amount of dignity intact.
