City Of God The Turf:

in this short two minute clip we are shown a lot of narrative. The film uses multiple flashbacks in this two minute scene. the story is linear and is being told from different view points. it shows an armature drug business being turned into a large professional one. the narrative uses comedy to make light of the situation as throughout the narrative it gets darker, this shows how the city of god changes as well as it went from a armature to large, her business starts of as a means to help raise her daughter, we are quickly taken away from this and the business has become only for profit and power. this short 2 minute scene has enough narrative and plot to create another film, however the film quickly briefs over them and you still get the key points. rockets story flows within the film as he is at the wrong place at the wrong time. the characters throughout the flashback of the turf get worse, the first owner of the business using it for good, while the second owner big boy uses power and corruption to make a larger drug corporation. in the scene where big boy is shown  he shown as powerful he dominates the screen taking up half of it, after big boy takes the  apartment, the apartment becomes immediately less domestic, as the centre of the home becomes the centre of business, the change in mise-en-scene shows development of the owners and how they get more greedy over time as the apparent gets more run down with each new owner. both the cops and drug dealers are shown to be corrupt and greedy,  as the line "payed off the cops" shows that the cops are no better than the people in the favelas. big boy at the start is shown to be good as he works for her, however his character turns bad as he forces the business into his hands and is an evil person, showing how the favelas easily corrupts people. Carrot follows after big boy but is shortly done with the business, carrot is another character turned bad, working for big boy and earning his trust, he lets in a friend who took care of him when he was down, big boy hired him, carrot friend messes up and big boy tells carrot to choose either he gets killed or he kills his friend, the murder is foreshadowed as when big boy dominates carrot lighting is mostly on big boy and the rest of the scene is hard it is implied something bad will happen. after carrot turns bad and kills his friend the scene gets a lot darker and the apparent gets even more run down, this is the same as the favelas. the film uses stylised techniques to takes you out of the film so it doesn't get too surreal. as the scene goes on the bedroom becomes darker and not being used showing that the once nice domestic house is now just for business, power and greed, showing how the morals of the people in the City Of God changes throughout the years. the editing uses fades and quick cuts to show changes in drug empire, the use of the fades makes the short story's seem like a big story. the editing is done well and the film keeps a good flow, it uses invisible editing and get the audience sucked into the story, it also uses syllabised editing to keep the flow of the film. the start of the scene is fast paste with lots of cuts. the start of the flashback the lighting is warm and inviting, while as it goes on it gets cooler and darker lighting showing the city of god to be evil. the title of the chapter "the story of the apartment" shows that this part is based on the mise-en-scene, the camera stays in one spot to show the scene and its change while the rest of the film is in hand held mode. the film goes from being personal to being documentary like.
