Casablanca Main Characters:
Richard "Rick" Blaine - Played by Ingrid Bergman
Rick is an american citizen who lives in Casablanca he runs a high end cafe, he is the films protagonist and the heroin. When we first meet rick he is a sinister and cold heart person who will not stick his neck out for no one, Rick is also an alcoholic at the start of the film implying that he is unstable and has troubles, he is alone in most scenes too. However throughput the film we learn why he is such a cold heart person, and we gain empathy for his actions. At the end of the film rick has developed into a person who cares for people and he finally sticks his neck out for someone even if he has to loose his freedom. Ricks development throughout the film shows that he wasn't the cynical person who everyone though he was, he will never turn back to the lover that he was in Paris but it is a good start for him. Ricks previous history was with Llsa Lund, she was the love of his life who made rick into a heart warmed lover for only her and forever for her, he always remembers Paris as it means a lot to him and Llsa, Rick wants Llsa to himself and turns into a wreck when shes not around, however he learns to let go and picks the best future for her even though he had such emotions for her. This revels Ricks personality as a true lover and self less, as he helps Llsa escape and not get into a concentration camp, he learns to let go and let her be with her husband and not him showing that he is a true passionate lover who only wants the best for his lover. The way that Rick speaks and acts around other characters is bad as he keeps his cynical tone, however when he is with Llsa he turn into a puppy, showing how much power she has over him as she is the only person who can tame rick. Ricks desires and goals is just to live a peaceful life and run his bar, however he does have corrupt police officers so he can live this peaceful life even though there are illegal parts.
Ilsa Lund - Played by Ingrid Bergman
Llsa is an Norwegian girl who is married to victor laszlo and is ricks past lover. She plays a hard role for an actress who is in her early 20s. her main goal in the film is to escape Casablanca and move to american as she fears that she will be put in a concentration camp, she is so desperate to flee that she threatens to shoot rick of she does not give the letters to her, however she cannot bring herself to do is as she is madly in love with rick, she believes that her love with Rick is destine even though she is married she seems not pleased with her marriage and rick can give her what she wants, the ways she interacts with character is sweet and light heart showing that she is a innocent and nice person however her personality is one of a cheater as when she finds out her husband is "dead" she falls in love very fast showing that she doesn't care about him and is a selfish character. The audience knows that she belongs to rick and she wants it too, however she is only with her husband as it pleases him, she will only leave Casablanca with laszlo and refuses to leave when she gets an exit visa. The letter symbolises the her as she can be cold and hard to read showing her feelings as almost impossible to read. she doesn't really show much character development throughout the film as she is so hard to read making her a challenging character to understand.
Captain Louis Renault - Played by Claude Rains
Louis is a french captain in Casablanca who is corrupt and works for rick, Louis represents the Vichy government as he serves and represents, has given up caring about right and wrong, and his only loyalty is to the winning side. He is a hypocrite, shown when he shuts down ricks bar for gambling but collects his winnings, showing how bad his personality is. He abuses his power by having sex with women for exit visa as he knows that they are easily vulnerable. Besides having a terrible personality he is always a good friend of rick and is kind heart to him and wouldn't do him wrong however when he speaks to to other characters he bases his powers to get what he wants because he knows he cant get in trouble as he is the captain of the police. His main goal is to get the Germans out of his country as he is patriotic and it annoys him when they think they can rule over him, he also dont want them to see how corrupt he is. He desires to use women as he knows what they wants and to get the Germans out so that he can go back to having power and having control over everything. Louis has previous history with rick and shows a lot of loyalty to him, showing even more how corrupt he is by letting rick get away with certain objectives. However at the end of the film Louis blooms into a beautiful character who is now light heart and caring, he turns against his country for rick and for the better good even letting rick get away with a shooting, it is a good gesture but "round up the usual suspects" shows that he will pin it on someone showing that he will only help ones he likes.
Victor Laszlo - Played by Paul Henreid
Victor is a Czech nationalist writer and anti-Nazi partisan. He is married to llsa and had endured time in a German concentration camp. He has a boring personality with not much to his name his main goal is to defeat the nazis and move to america for safety, however he will only move to america with his wife even though he knows about her and rick. This shows his personality as week and vulnerable as he does not have hatred towards rick because he love Llsa so much he would do anything for her and it is what keeps him going he would even sacrifices himself. His desire is just to have a happy life with his wife away from the war even though he has much hatred for the Germans, even though he has a bland personality he is a noble and courageous guy. He is the least complex to understand as he is easily readable and a sharp. He represents commitment even if it means he will sacrifice himself showing how self less he is. Laszlo doesn't develop much as he is always the outspoken and charming guy, this is why laszlo is a likeable character as he puts all his cards on the table instead of shying away despise having political problems he will always pull through.
