Captain fantastic opening and ending:
the opening:
in the opening we are shown a crazy family who are killing an innocent dear to make someone into a man, however as the opening goes on we see the family yo be sweet and caring who care about them and wants to protect family at all costs. In the start we are aligned with the males as they are seen as the powerful and important ones as we are listing to dialogue from them and they are the main focus in the shot. the main character that we are aligned with is the dad as he is the alpha of the group the opening title has him in it showing that he is captain fantastic. we believe we should alliance with the father as he knows what he is doing as he can take care of a large squad and be a good father. We are introduced as the males being the powerful and in control of everything and the females being side charters who have to follow what the males say, this shows that the dad is traditional and believes the male should do everything labour. we are shown their life style and it is alternative as they arnt in society and are in the middle of the woods away from everyone we are shown that they live an armish life style with no electricity and no modern clothes. they have no cell phones and no knowledge of what modern lifestyle is like. the father is traditional and put his believes onto his kids with showing them old style instead of new style and believing that man is more powerful than woman. the father is a man who only cares about his family he will always put them first and will do sacrifices for them.education wise they see uneducated in certain departments as they are well educated in life and survival as they can take care of themselves in certain scenarios and know how to hunt and take care of themselves. at the start of the film we hear no music we hear thew quite steps of a dear the film is quite for about a minute and 5 seconds this helps set the atmosphere of stealth and the family being good at survival. the first human sound that we hear is of a human killing a dear in a cruel way and letting out a war cry, we dont hear dialogue until 2:40 when we hear the father turning his son into a man showing that the father is the main reason this family is able to survive as he showed his son how too. the first bit of music that we do hear is the title screen and the father standing with arms open, the music we hear is holy like. this shows that the father is the fantastic one of the group and is the saviour for this family this music goes on as the family goes back to normal showing that the family is normal and sweet to an extent. the music gets more upbeat as the scene goes on to show the family as happy and enjoying their life even if they are living like animals. the quite scenes work as it helps the dialogue stand out with the family and show the males as in control. the performance is well excited the body language of the father shows that he believes that he is a great man with a lot of potential as is shown by his moments and facial expressions. the females are shown as less happier and following what their father says shown within the body movement and language. bo is shown as a tough guy shown by his body language as he kills a dear with no regrets and does it well. The costumes that are worn by the characters is hunting gear the reason they do this is to blend in with the setting and that clothes would be hard to find and make in the wooded area the people the males are mostly shirtless to save clothes and to show of masculinity, the starting they have mud all over their body to show that they are blending in are serious in what they do. the key props in the setting is the hunting knife and the dears heart as it makes bo into a man, the heart signifies life and how he has improved with his hunting and is now able to be looked at as a proper man by his father, this is the same for the knife. the setting that we are in is a unknown wooded area the film does not tell us where it is to add to the scent of mystery and confusion. the other setting that we are shown is a nice looking house with the family living comfortable however there is a shrine to a crazy man that one of the kids has done showing that the family is not mentally stable and they are showing red flags. the cinematography is a lot of tripod camera with the camera being held still this helps show how comfortable the family is with their lifestyle and how trained they are in what they are doing. there are a lot of wide angle shots and upper body shots to show the viewer the place they are at there are also establishing shots to make the viewer more aligned with the family the hand held camera works to build tension when the dear is being killed too. the editing is invisible and isnt noticeable it isnt too often and there are no fades just normal cuts. the title page is edited onto the side of the father at the start of the film too. the sequence if the shots works well as the flow well and are clear as it tells the narrative well.
the ending:
in the ending much hasn't changed the father is still the same as he is traditional and still asserts his dominance over the family even when one of his children are leaving. we get a lack luster ending witch is sad as the bus is now unable to move showing that the family is settled downed and that another we are still aligned with the father but we also have alliance with bo as he is leaving the nest. this links with the start as bo is becoming a man again as he is leaving and now has joined society. the narrative hasn't changed much as the start links in the end as they all still live under their fathers rule and everyone is coming independent in society. it still has the same themes of family staying together and the father having to protect them at all costs and he has become more accepting of what the family wants as he learns to change even though he isn't happy with it as a new life style and becoming apart of society showing that he has changed and has let his defence down a little bit. the family is learning better and is getting better education and not being shown crazy people but are being shown normal imagery for their age. they still do live an alternative life style but it is more normal now this is the same as they live a traditional life style. the father is still traditional as he tells bo about having premarital sex. the setting has changed as they are in an airport showing that they are trying to be a normal family the other setting that they are at is a country side house with is normal looking and feels very comfortable and safe. the costumes are more modern and have much more colour there is also hair cuts witch makes them look more modern too showing that they are changing to be better with society little by little even though the father misses the outdoors. there is no key props in the ending scene as it is emotional on bos leaving the family. the father body language is still dormant the same goes with bo but his is gotten more domination than from the start as he has now turned into a man. the performance of the females hasn't changed as they still arnt as dominant as the males and are still cast aside as the father is still very traditional. the conversation with the father and the son is emotional and wholesome they remove the sound from the scene to make it more emotional as the words he are saying shows that he does cares a lot about his family even if he has a weird way of showing it. there isnt much sound effects beside normal airport sounds it is non diagteic sounding as it is suttle and not noticeable. when we return to the new house we are shown with the same music that we hear from the start again showing that much hasn't changed the emotional music is relaxing as we see the new life style and how different it is for the family. the movie ends in silence and a deep sigh from the father showing that he misses the out doors and he will always miss it but he does it for this family. the editing is still invisible and not notice working well and showing thew family as calm and relaxed as they are changing the order of shots is still in chronological order telling the story as clean and smooth. the camera movement is tripod and hand held showing that it hast changed it still uses close ups and wide angle shots with establishing shots too to show the viewer the new setting as they would not be familiar with it as they are as new to it as the family are.
