The first character that we are introduced to is Tom Bell, we see nothing but all we can hear is his voice, from the first 5 seconds we implies that he is a old man who knows about the town he lives in. he is is shown to be non fearing of much and having a careless attitude as he has been a sheriff for so long he knows what to expect. He is a old time foe, without seeing him we already know what type of person he is. he tells us a chilling story of a murder in a monotone voice showing that he sees this stuff all the time. we know that he is a man that is finding it hard to get with the times as crime is shifting and is getting more and more scary but he knows what to expect from this work. We dont see him in the opening, this will later on work with the film as he is always late to stuff and just wants to be retired.
the second character that we are introduced too is Anton Chigurh. Anton is a mysterious character in the opening with little to non dialogue. when we first see him he is being arrested and is very calm saying no words and having n resist against the officer. this shows the audience that he is the villain of the movie and will work his way out of the situation. the clothing that is being worn by anton is out of place and mysterious for the time it is like he is from the future again creating mystery for the audience as we dont know what type of person he is and why is he here looking weird and causing trouble. we see him murder a the sheriff proving our points right about him being a crazy villain who is out of place. we can also tell that he is a trained very well and knows what he is doing.
The third character that we are shown is Llewelyn Moss, he fits in with his setting shown by his clothing and actions that he is doing. we know that he is trained with weapons but too an extent as he cant kill a dear showing that he is just a every man and we should believe that he wont amount to much. we believe that he is ex army as he picks up his bullets to leave no trace of himself showing that he is smart to an extent.
the camera movement is little to non as it is tripod use in the opening as his helps establish the scenery, as the start opens it shows how man is destroying the land little by little the longer that we are here and how nature is being destroyed by mans selfish themes. the moment is an establish shot to show the dry land and how man is destroying it. the camera uses a close up on antons face to show how crazy he is. the camera is held steady at all times to show that anton knows what he is doing and this isnt his first time. when the sheriff has the back to anton there is a slow zoom in to show that something important is going to happen to this character., the lighting and colour is bland showing how the people o the town are washed out like sheriff bell. in the coin toss scene there is a over the shoulder shot to show how tense the victim is in this situation and the close up on antons face to show that he is having fun with his and is a crazy man who sees himself as a god like creature. with zooms ins to try to align you with anton but it never working. There is only a tiny bit of music in the film and the first bit of music comes from the coin toss scene it stands out and is different as the music os so rare and we should feel privileged to hear music. the music used is eary and monotone witch is quietly faded in to add to the effect of anton being crazy. the first bit of sound we hear is tom bell, this aligns us with tom bell as we think he is a good guy with who just wants to help his town the lack of music makes all sounds stand out and be loud as they are diagetic they are more eary as well when anton is in the scene. the lack of music also makes you focus on dialogue and pick up on what is being said more. the performance used int he opening is creepy as we are only shown anton as the other two main characters are no where to be seen once again showing anton as a professional and moss being a every man. the movie tries to align us with anton but never works as he is so out of place and out of charter. any charter that interacts with anton in the opening is scared by him and he gives off negative vibes. the editing used is invisible and isn't noticeable as it has clean cuts at the right points and isn't too often. all the shots are in order and follows a clean story that is well packed together. this is again shown n the coin toss scene as it is clean and works very well. the setting is a dry land up south as you can tell by the peoples clothing we are set in sometime after Vietnam the key prop in the coin toss scene is the food anton is eating and the coin as it is playing life or death with this mans life. the costume for most character is in place and works well as they blend in with the setting. whilst antons clothing is out of place and is weird as he looks like he is from the future and from the city.
the audience is aligned with the sheriff and never with anton or moss as we go to the theme of chaos vs justice as tom is a sheriff and anton is a crazy murder who believe he is god like as he puts peoples life into his hands. the opening scene is confusing as we are only shown one of the main character and his crazy antics that he does for fun and what he does for work.
